If you own an Elite gate and the welds are cracking, hinges are tearing loose, or a section of the steel frame has rusted through, we can fix it. In Orange County, most Elite welding and fabrication repairs run $240 – $680 installed, depending on the extent of the damage and whether we’re reinforcing an existing section or fabricating a new one. We stock steel stock, gussets, and hinge plates on our trucks, so we can handle most weld repairs the same day.
Here’s the symptom picture we see most often across Orange County: a gate starts sagging by half an inch, then a full inch, and then one evening it won’t latch because the hinge welds have finally let go. Or a powder-coated steel gate develops rust bubbles along the bottom rail near the ocean air in Huntington Beach or Newport, and when you poke at it, the metal is flaking. Sometimes it’s a crack running out from a bolt hole on the opener mounting plate. None of these are cosmetic. They’re structural failures that get worse every time the gate cycles, because an opener keeps pushing against a frame that no longer holds its shape.
Which Elite Models This Applies To
Elite gates in Orange County are typically built from 1.5-inch or 2-inch square steel tube, with a wall thickness of 0.083 to 0.120 inch. That spec matters for two reasons: first, it tells us what amperage and rod type to use so the new weld actually bonds instead of just laying a surface bead, and second, it tells us whether the section needs reinforcement beyond a simple reweld. The model line you have matters less than the steel spec, but the common ones we work on are Elite slide gate operators mounted on ornamental steel gates, Elite swing gate systems with welded steel leaves, and the Elite SL-series on steel-frame gates with aluminum infill. If you can’t find a model plate, measure the tubing width and wall thickness with a caliper or a tape measure at a drill point, and take a photo of the weld area before you call. It shortens the diagnosis.
A note on parts: Elite doesn’t sell gate frame components as OEM parts. The steel structure is fabricated, not manufactured as a bolt-on assembly. So when a weld fails, there’s no “Elite replacement weld kit” to order. The right fix is either a proper repair by a fabricator who understands how much load the operator puts on the frame, or a replacement section built to the same steel dimensions. We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Elite, and for this work that’s an advantage: we fabricate and weld on-site rather than waiting on a parts desk. We do carry Elite opener arms, hinge brackets, and mounting hardware, but the frame itself is our fabrication work.

Signs Your Elite Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- Visible crack lines radiating from bolt holes or hinge plates. This is fatigue cracking from years of opener torque against a point load. It will spread. A crack means the steel has already lost tension integrity at that point, not just at the visible line.
- Gate sagging on the latch side, with a widening gap at the top hinge. The hinge welds are stretching or tearing loose. The gate’s weight is now hanging on the opener arm and latch hardware instead of the hinges, which accelerates the failure.
- Rust blistering along the bottom rail or anywhere two tubes meet. Salt air in coastal Orange County cities like Costa Mesa, Newport Beach, and San Clemente eats powder coat once it’s scratched. Water pools inside the tube and rusts it from the inside out, so you see the blister before you see the hole.
- The gate shudders or jerks at the start of each cycle. That’s the opener fighting a frame that’s already twisted or binding. The motor is telling you the steel isn’t moving cleanly anymore.
- Opener failures that keep coming back. When a gear strips or a limit switch burns out repeatedly, the root cause is often a warped gate putting abnormal load on the operator. Fix the steel, and the electrical gremlins disappear.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Orange County, expect these ranges for Elite welding and fabrication work:
- Crack repair at a hinge or bolt hole: $120 – $260 per point, including grinding out the crack, welding, and a gusset plate for reinforcement
- Hinge plate replacement with new steel: $180 – $340 per hinge, including cutting out the corroded plate and welding a fresh one
- Bottom rail section replacement due to rust-through: $300 – $650, depending on the length and whether the gate needs to be lifted off for access
- Full frame reinforcement (multiple cracks, twisted tubes): $450 – $900 and up, depending on the scope
- Complete new gate leaf fabrication, powder-coated and installed: $1,800 – $4,500, measured per job, not per square foot
Every price is written down and agreed to before we strike an arc. No open-ended hourly billing on weld work. The quote includes grinding, prep, welding rod, steel stock, and cleanup. Every repair carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the weld or fabrication fails within a year, we come back at no charge and make it right.
DIY or Call Us?
We’ll be straight with you: welding gate steel is not a DIY job for anyone without a real MIG or TIG setup and the eye to know the difference between a decent bead and a dangerous one. The safety issue is real. A gate that comes off its hinges outweighs a person by a lot, and a weld that looks fine but has poor penetration can fail catastrophically with no warning. The opener keeps cycling hundreds of times a week, and each cycle stresses every weld. If you don’t weld regularly, don’t start on a gate that can hurt someone.
What you can safely do: mark every crack with a paint pen so you can tell whether it’s spreading, check the hinge bolt tightness with a wrench, and clear debris from the track if it’s a slide gate. Then call us. Nico Alvarez and our crew will assess the full weld pattern, not just the visible break, and tell you exactly what needs to be fixed before we touch it. FAQs
Well-executed welds on properly prepped steel typically last 15 to 25 years in Orange County’s climate, but coastal halocline exposure from the marine layer can cut that to 10 to 12 years if the powder coat was ever scratched. The failure point is almost never the weld itself in our experience; it’s the steel around it that rusts or fatigues first. Proper surface prep and a good gusset design add years. Call (831) 603-6424 if you’re seeing early cracking; it’s usually a sign of a load problem upstream, not a bad weld.
Most weld failures can be repaired with proper grinding and reinforcement. The exceptions are rust-through, where the steel is too thin to weld soundly and needs a new section spliced in. We’ll always tell you which one you’re looking at and price it on the spot.
Most crack and hinge repairs take 60 to 90 minutes of actual weld time, with total visit time running 2 to 3 hours including prep, grinding, and cleanup. We typically complete most single-point repairs the same day we arrive.
We carry common steel tube sizes, flat bar for gussets, hinge plates, and Elite opener mounting hardware on our trucks in Orange County, so most structural repairs don’t require a second trip. We also stock parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls openers when the electrical side needs attention at the same time.
