We install and replace Ghost Controls access control parts across Orange County, with most jobs priced between $185 and $420 including the part and labor. Same-day or next-day service is available in most of the county when we have the specific part on the truck, which is more often than not with Ghost Controls kits. The typical call starts the same way: your keypad stopped opening the gate, the remote works from the driveway but not the street, or the gate opens on its own at 2 a.m. because a receiver went bad. That’s usually the access control side failing, not the operator motor itself.
If your Ghost Controls opener physically moves the gate fine but the keypad, remote, or intercom can’t trigger it, the access control board or receiver is the likely culprit. We see this constantly in Orange County, especially in coastal neighborhoods like Costa Mesa, Newport, Huntington Beach, Laguna Niguel, and San Clemente where salt air accelerates corrosion on exposed wiring and keypad contacts.
Which Ghost Controls Models This Applies To
Ghost Controls has kept their control board design fairly consistent across their two main residential lines: the AXDP series (duel gate openers) and the AX1 series (single gate openers). The access control components, which include the main control board, the wireless receiver, the keypad, and the remote transmitters, all share the same communication protocol. That means a Ghost Controls keypad or receiver from 2016 will generally pair with a board from 2023. But there’s one compatibility gotcha we run into all the time: the older AXDP-DK and AXDP-KP kits use a 433MHz receiver, while the newer AXDP2 boards switched to a dual-frequency receiver that also reads the 318MHz signal from their newer keypads. If you buy a new Ghost Controls remote and it won’t sync, you may be mixing generations.
For the physical keypad and receiver modules, Ghost Controls typically stamps the model number on the back of the housing, usually starting with “G” followed by a letter, such as GKP-1 or GR-1. Before we recommend replacement versus repair, we always check the board revision, because newer boards handle power surges better. An aftermarket receiver from a brand like North Shore Commercial can work on some Ghost Controls boards, but we prefer OEM parts here. The Ghost Controls receiver and board are tuned to each other, and a mismatched aftermarket receiver often causes intermittent signal drops that are nearly impossible to trace.
Styles & brands we work with

Signs Your Ghost Controls Access Control Installation Is Failing
- Keypad lights up but the gate won’t move. This usually means the keypad itself is transmitting, but the receiver on the board isn’t acknowledging the signal. The most common cause is a failing relay on the control board, not the keypad.
- Remotes work only when you’re within 10 feet of the gate. The receiver antenna may be damaged, or the receiver module itself is losing sensitivity. In Orange County, we also see this when a neighbor’s new WiFi extender or solar inverter creates signal interference on the same frequency.
- The gate opens by itself, usually at night. A failing receiver can pick up stray signals from nearby garage door remotes, gate openers, or even some smart home devices. This is a security issue, not a convenience issue.
- One keypad stops working while the other still functions. If the board works for one access control input but not another, the input channel on the board may have failed. Ghost Controls boards have separate terminals for keypad, receiver, and hardwired inputs.
- The access control board clicks when you press the button but nothing happens. You’re hearing the relay physically engage, but the contacts inside the relay are worn or corroded. This is a classic Ghost Controls failure after 5 to 7 years in coastal Orange County air.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
For Orange County Ghost Controls access control work, here’s what you can expect to pay, parts and labor included:
- Keypad replacement: $150 – $285 depending on whether we’re replacing the keypad alone or also addressing wiring runs from the gate to the house.
- Receiver module replacement: $120 – $220, including reprogramming all existing remotes to the new receiver.
- New remote transmitters (single or pair): $45 – $95 for programming and pairing.
- Control board replacement: $265 – $420, which includes transferring settings, reprogramming all access control devices, and verifying the safety edges and auto-close timer after the swap.
- Full access control kit (board + keypad + receiver + 2 remotes): $375 – $575, which is often the smarter buy when the board is 8 years old or older and you’ve already replaced one component once.
Every quote is written out before we start work. You’ll see the part cost, the labor time, and the total, and the number we quote is the number you pay. No surprise add-ons when we show up. And every Ghost Controls access control installation we do carries the Calder 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the repair fails within a year, we return at no charge. No fine print, no prorating.

Safe to check yourself: confirm the keypad has power, replace the batteries in your remotes, and check for obvious physical damage to wires running into the control box. If a landscaper nicked a wire with a weed whacker, you’ll see it. These checks take five minutes and cost nothing.
Where DIY goes sideways: Ghost Controls control boards have capacitors that hold a charge even after you cut power. If you short the wrong terminals while the board is powered, you can fry a $100 board into a $300 replacement plus a service call. The low-voltage access wiring is safe to touch, but the board itself isn’t a place for trial and error. Replacing a keypad is usually fine for a confident DIYer. Replacing a board or chasing an intermittent signal problem isn’t. If you’re unsure, call us at (831) 603-6424, tell me what the gate is doing, and I’ll tell you exactly what it needs, no guessing, no runaround.
FAQs
In Orange County, expect 5 to 8 years from a Ghost Controls control board before the relay or receiver module starts to fail. Coastal homes in Huntington Beach, Balboa, or San Clemente often see failures on the earlier end of that range because persistent salt air accelerates corrosion on the relay contacts and antenna connection. Inland cities like Irvine, Tustin, and Mission Viejo typically get 7 to 9 years.
Sometimes. If the receiver issue is a corroded antenna connection or a loose terminal, we can often clean and re-seat it for under $100. But if the receiver module itself is losing sensitivity or picking up phantom signals, replacement is the only long-term fix. A repaired receiver that sort of works usually fails again within six months. Call (831) 603-6424 and we’ll diagnose it straight.
A keypad or receiver swap usually takes 45 to 75 minutes on site. A full control board replacement with reprogramming takes 90 minutes to 2 hours, depending on how many remotes, keypads, and safety devices need to be re-paired. We quote the time upfront so you know exactly what block of the day to plan around.
Yes. Our trucks carry Ghost Controls keypads, receivers, remotes, and control boards for the AXDP and AX1 series as standard inventory, along with parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and DoorKing. If we’re missing a specific board revision for your model, we can usually have it from our Orange County parts distributor within one business day.
